The Tidal Patterns of Fashion

While the world of fashion is one that is often seen as an unregulated mass of denim, satin, ribbons and lace. In all actuality, though, there are rhythyms and patterns, influences that always reign supreme and dictate what is hot and what is not. Two things to always remember:

 

Fashion Theme #1: Whatever was cool when today’s 20-somethings were born, is cool again.

The late ’90s saw a surge in puffy vests, bell-bottom jeans, hippie smocks, and ridiculously tall shoes, the trademark designs of the dying disco age 20 years earlier. Currently, everybody wants to be seen in black horn-rimmed classes, vests, suitcoats, formal dresses and the “nice-clothes-worn-badly” motif of the ’80s. Belt buckles salute old-school Nintendos, and tape players are making a comeback a la retro electronics. The fashion world caters to the rising generation. Think of it; an entire industry turns on the desires of 15-25 year-olds.

Fashion Theme #2: If It Was Cool Before, It Will Be Cool Again.

It’s humorous every time the current generations reinvents the fashion wheel and thinks they have discovered a new fashion; haircuts from the 1920′s have been revived again and again, most noteably in the 1960s and early 200s. Odds are, if you have an awesome dress or shirt from your childhood, as stated in Theme #1, you’ll have a chance to wear it again in a decade or so. Moustaches, the rave in the ’80s and taboo in the ’90s, are unfortunately making a comback.

Fashion is fickle, but predictably so. If it went around, it will come back by again, and in the mean time, everyone will look fabulous.

It is very common to describe the media industry covering fashion in a single word. However, the truth is that there are different aspects and different facets of fashion related media affecting our life differently.

The first in the most powerful medium of covering fashion is the television or the visual media. What you see is going to affect you the most. Watching a model strutting on the ramp with a dress designed in a specific manner is definitely going to make a huge impact on you. You will either like it or hate it. It will be very difficult to remain ambivalent about anything that is presented in such a classy manner.

The next popular medium is the print media. A large number of fashion magazines have acquired the reputation of being the ultimate authority in terms of fashion trends. Many individuals have their own personal favorite and do not look beyond their favorite magazine. You would do well to keep track of the trends described in all magazines.

Many times, you may find contradictory information being stated. This is integral to the world of fashion because nobody wants to look the same but everybody still wants to be a part of a organic whole.

The third and the fastest growing medium is the internet. Visual, print and virtual media can be assimilated on the internet. You can not only keep track of the latest events but also watch it live on your computer. You can check out copies of magazines and check out other images that may not be so easy to obtain when buying magazines.

Fashion And Media – Is Hype The Cause Or The Consequence Of A Popular Fashion Trend?

Does the fashion trend become popular because it is highlighted by the media or is it highlighted by the media because it is popular? Such a question is very similar to chicken and egg one where it is impossible to find out which came first. The truth is that the media latches onto any new trend introduced by a reputed and well established fashion house and highlights it before it becomes a real success at the ground level.

The end result is that the media hype forces many persons to opt for the trend, which in turn makes it more popular. This creates a vicious cycle where even bad fashion trends can quickly become very popular and may appeal to a large number of persons in a very short period of time.

However, such trends fade away because people, at the end of the day, do not like buying anything that makes them look bad. Yet, the reputation of the big fashion house gets reinforced and the role of media is highlighted. This cozy relationship often leads to a loss for the average individual on the street who is forced to accept whatever the media says.

Take media hype with a pinch of salt. If you believe fashion is all about following the popular trend, then you would do well to listen to what the media says. However, if you have your own perception of what looks good on you, you should keep track of the media and the latest trends but should apply your brain before making any choices for your clothes and accessories.

Fashion Is Smashin’ So Don’t Be Bashin’

As the seasons change it’s important as ever to keep up on the latest developments in the fashion world. What colors will be hot this season? What patterns will accentuate the effects of the weather? Indeed, it may benefit you to do so, as the latest research indicates that shopping can be good for one’s health! Like anything else, doing so excessively will not help you—in all things moderation, as the philosopher says.
